The UK’s live events industry

How big is the live events industry? How can we work together to make it bigger and better? And why does this industry matter – to governments, clients, suppliers and the European economy? Questions like this are easy to ask and not so easy to answer.

In fact, conversations with colleagues in European markets often result in a shrug of the shoulders and a recognition that, despite the time and commitment we make in our working lives, we don’t really know the answers.

At EVCOM it’s our business to help our members be more successful, so here’s a quick overview of the UK live communications market to help get a better understanding of our industry.

The UK events sector contributes £42.3 billion in terms of visitor expenditure to the UK economy with an estimated £21.4 billion of direct expenditure being generated by conference and meeting delegates, organisers in venues and the wider destination spend alone. On average there are 1.25 million events being held in the UK annually. (Source BVEP and UCAMS15).

The UK’s creative industries are worth a staggering £84.1 billion to the UK economy (source DCMS).  The creative economy has grown by a quarter since 2011, at a rate faster than the whole of the UK economy which only grew by 12.1 per cent.’ (Source DCMS).

These are indeed exciting times, we work in a fast growing industry and technology is playing a huge role in this growth.  Event planners are using more and more advanced new technologies such as apps, social media, film and digital content to engage their audiences and add to the overall event experience.  The buzz word nowadays is engagement, giving the visitor or delegate that memorable experience, capturing their attention, their imagination, in the hope that their experience will be the one that leaves that lasting impression. It is this very overlap which saw the creation of EVCOM in 2014.  Created from two highly successful associations – eventia representing the live event world, and IVCA representing the visual communication sector.

“For us at EVCOM representing an influential and growing industry is a responsibility we take pride in. We work alongside our members to harness our collective power and ability to trigger change for the better. We promote the highest standards of professionalism and best practice in the industry, offering members strong visibility, recognition and credibility, bringing together some of the most dedicated professionals in the events and visual communication spectrum, providing them with an influential platform to meet some of the industry’s leading professionals, strike up valuable partnerships and make tangible benefits through seminars, CPD and regular networking events.”

Steve Garvey, EVCOM Chairman

Who are we?

EVCOM is the official voice of the live event and visual communication industry in the UK. Through training, networking, lobbying and awards, we champion the power and value of communication. EVCOM is the largest member association in Europe for creators and commissioners of corporate and public sector communication for the live event, film and digital industries.  We have over 500 members with 45 of these members based across Europe, Asia and America.

What do we do?

Here are just some of the ways we help our industry, clients and communities thrive in this ever evolving market:

NETWORKING
Meet inspirational people.

Our events, training seminars and regular meet-ups help build a strong community.  Some of the most inspirational projects we’ve ever seen have come as part of collaborations between our members, both in ideas and in mutually beneficial partnerships. We provide an academy day, breakfast sessions, drink’s receptions and forums for specific membership groups. These regular networking meetings provide opportunities to make great new contacts, boost professional networks and collectively benefit our industry.

INDUSTRY VOICE
Speak up and be heard.

We are a progressive and effective representative body, and we are strengthened by our members input. Together we can address issues which affect us all, great and small – including our recent success in getting the law changed on National Insurance, our campaigning on TOMs legislation and action on sustainability. With regular action meetings and effective representation, we can help form a consensus and voice on issues that affect everyone, and we have the influence to make those changes happen.

DEVELOPMENT
Leading the way in training.

We have an unrivalled range of training seminars, policy meetings, CPD sessions and educational activities each year. We don’t just aim to reflect our values externally across the industry, we want to help our members live them as well. This means that training is at the heart of what we do.  For everyone from freelancers and boutique agencies, to some of the biggest names in the industry, there is always something new to learn.  EVCOMference is our annual educational event and consists of keynote talks, participatory workshops and inspiring sessions as well as ample networking opportunities.  EVCOMference takes place on Thursday 30th June 2016.

AWARDS
Showcasing talent and successes.

We understand how important it is that our top talents are recognised and host three major Awards Schemes per year for projects that empower our clients and inspire our peers.

The EVCOM Screen Awards, formerly the IVCA Awards, are the most prestigious awards in corporate film and visual communication.  The EVCOM Screen Awards Ceremony will be held at Lindley Hall, Westminster on Thursday 28th April 2016.

The EVCOM Clarion Awards promote: social inclusion, CSR, sustainable development and ethical debate.  The EVCOM Clarion Awards 2016 open for entries in May and the Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday 29th September.

The EVCOM Live Awards are the most respected mark of excellence in the live and experiential industry, attracting entries from all around the world.  The EVCOM Live Awards 2016 will open for entries in July and the Awards Ceremony will take place at Supernova, Victoria Embankment on Friday 18th November.

With these entertaining, valuable and industry-leading awards evenings, great work produced time and time again will get the industry recognition it deserves.

What our members say…

“EVCOM is a fantastic network of peers and provides invaluable resources and access to information not otherwise readily available. It provides us with opportunities for growth at a professional and at a personal level through their education, training and annual conferences that offer development opportunities for our staff. Listing that we are a patron member of EVCOM in our tender responses enhances our reputation and strengthens our submissions. Above all it is great to be part of a likeminded community to understand commonalities in industry challenges, opportunities and threats and have an active involvement in representing the sectors voice. ”

Andrew Winterburn, Ashfield Healthcare

“Integro Entertainment (formerly ACJ) continue to be very proud of our long standing partnership with EVCOM, Dave Comley and the team. They run a thoroughly professional trade association body with the best interests of the Live & Visual Communication industry and its members at heart and one its membership can be extremely proud of. ”
